1 of 1

Tsukamaki is a traditional Japanese technique in which cord or leather is wrapped around the hilt of a Japanese sword, creating a finish that is both beautiful and highly functional.
For the samurai, the sword was regarded as the embodiment of the soul, and tsukamaki is not only a symbolic adornment but also an essential technique that supports practical use.

Tate (stage combat) refers to stylised fighting movements developed for theatre and film. It has been refined as a safe performance art that conveys intensity and realism without causing injury.
By learning sword stances, movements, and the sense of distance between opponents, you can experience both Japan’s distinctive stage arts and the spirit of bushidō.

This programme offers a special opportunity to experience both tsukamaki and tate in a single session, allowing you to explore Japanese samurai culture deeply from the perspectives of craftsmanship and performing arts.
