Haruka Shimura
An incense-making instructor who has shared the art of Japanese incense making and fragrance culture with more than 10,000 people.
Japanese incense was introduced to Japan alongside Buddhism and developed uniquely as a practice to calm the mind and purify spaces. It is not merely a fragrance, but a culture found only in Japan, nurtured within the country’s climate, history, and spiritual sensibility.
Honouring this background and essence, she teaches incense making using carefully selected, premium-grade natural aromatic ingredients, showing how fragrance can be integrated into daily life in harmony with one’s living space, attire, and the changing seasons.
The time spent making incense begins with quietly listening to one’s own senses. The process of selecting, layering, and confirming fragrances is a moment to step away from external information and gently face one’s inner sensibility.
So that even beginners may participate with confidence, instruction is provided slowly and carefully, from the fundamentals of fragrance to the art of blending.
Rather than focusing on “making it well,” she values “feeling.”
Through fragrance, she hopes participants will savour a time to experience their own individuality.
