What is the Shinobue?
The shinobue is a traditional Japanese side-blown bamboo flute.
It has been used for centuries in gagaku (court music), kagura (Shinto ritual music), Noh theater, and festival music.
Its charm lies in the warm, natural tone produced by bamboo and breath. Unlike Western instruments with fixed scales, the shinobue produces subtle shades of pitch and timbre, allowing personal expression and evoking the landscapes and seasons of Japan.
Playing a shinobue you have crafted yourself is more than music—it is a direct encounter with Japanese tradition through your own breath.
