What is Nishijin-ori?
Nishijin-ori is one of Japan’s most prestigious textiles, originating in Kyoto’s Nishijin district over a thousand years ago. Known for its intricate patterns and vibrant use of color, it weaves together threads of varying hues and luster to create richly dimensional fabrics.
Every piece is the result of painstaking adjustments in loom operation, tension, and weaving sequence—ensuring that even designs based on the same pattern carry unique character. This craft continues to be treasured today, from kimono sashes and stage costumes to interior fabrics.
